Put a fork in the season. It’s over.

Posted by Nanci Barthelmess on 30 September 2007

As I write this the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants are playing the last inning of the regular season, but for all intents and purposes, it’s over. The San Diego Padres and the Colorado Rockies have a one game playoff tomorrow night in Denver to find out who the National League Wild Card team will be, but for Dodger fans the season’s over. The best we can do is hope for next season, but we’re definitely not happy at how the season ended. Read the rest of this entry »

Fixing the Ubuntu Gutsy boot splash issue

Posted by Nanci Barthelmess on 30 September 2007

There’s a bit of a known issue in the beta of Ubuntu Gutsy where the boot splash doesn’t show up with the progress bar. While it isn’t an official solution, i did manage to find a workaround that seems to be doing the trick for now. Read the rest of this entry »

Greetings from Ubuntu Gutsy!

Posted by Peng on 27 September 2007

(This post was actually written for my brother Peng, so I’ve changed the authorship to Peng. While I actually wrote it, the truth is that he pretty much dictated the post to me and deserves the credit for it. We apologize for any deception that you now feel. -Nanci)

Just past midnight last night I started the process of upgrading my Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn to the brand new beta of Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. An hour and 45 minutes later my computer rebooted and I got my first look at the next release of this very popular Linux distribution. It wasn’t totally glitch free, but so far I’m loving Gutsy. Need a great way to search the official information sources for Ubuntu Linux?

Posted by Nanci Barthelmess on 26 September 2007

One of the best resources for information on the Ubuntu flavor of Linux is their forums, but there are other great resources you may not know of. Now there’s a search engine specifically for getting information on using Ubuntu. Read the rest of this entry »

We have new Ubuntu Screencasts

Posted by Nanci Barthelmess on 26 September 2007

Last week I told you about the Month of Ubuntu Screencasts, and that for some reason we hadn’t gotten a new screencast in several days. I’m happy to let you know that since I started writing my last post they have posted two new screencasts, one on installing applications and one on updating and upgrading your Ubuntu installation. Something tells me they have more screencasts to post before the day’s out, so go start enjoying the new screencasts. They’re even educational for someone who’s been using Ubuntu pretty much full time for the past ten months or so.

Starting the move to Ubuntu Gutsy while still running Feisty

Posted by Peng on 26 September 2007

(This post was actually written for my brother Peng, so I”ve changed the authorship to Peng. While I actually wrote it, the truth is that he pretty much dictated the post to me and deserves the credit for it. We apologize for any deception that you now feel. . -Nanci)

In my first post on this blog I mentioned that I was using the Feisty Fawn version of Ubuntu Linux (version 7.04) and I was looking forward to upgrading to the new Gutsy Gibbon version (7.10) when it hits beta tomorrow, although I had concerns about my video drivers. walkerk wrote a great tutorial over on the Ubuntu Forums about upgrading to the new kernel (base files for the operating system) and after getting caught up with reading over 50 pages of the thread I finally decided to take the plunge. While I did had a glitch with the video drivers it was an easy fix and even while running Ubuntu Feisty I’m noticing some improvements.

Warning: Some pretty heavy geek-speak is included, but I’ll try to keep it to a minimum.

If you’re looking for information on actually making the upgrade to Ubuntu Gutsy you want this post.

This almost cries out to be on a t-shirt

Posted by Nanci Barthelmess on 26 September 2007

While catching with the blogs on Ubuntu Planet today I saw something that should go on a tee if it only weren’t so long:

While it’s probably fine to make an ass out of yourself, please don’t apply the same logic to others.

Amazon starts selling MP3’s, as long as you don’t use Linux

Posted by Nanci Barthelmess on 25 September 2007

It seems major companies need to get a clue card when it comes to how popular Linux is. First Major League Baseball moves their video to Microsoft’s Silverlight platform which naturally doesn’t support Linux, although they will be supporting the MacOS before longer. Now Amazon has begun selling MP3s without any Digital Rights Management garbage. As long as you don’t use Linux. Read the rest of this entry »

Grammar checking comes to OpenOffice.org

Posted by Nanci Barthelmess on 20 September 2007

One thing that MS Office has long had that the open source alternative OpenOffice.org didn’t has been a language checker. But that’s not the case anymore. Read the rest of this entry »

Hello world!

Posted by Nanci Barthelmess on 19 September 2007

Ahoy! I decided I wanted my own blog. My brother, Peng, used to run a WP blog so I figured this would be a great platform to use. He knows he’s going to be called upon to provide some support from time to time, and he’s fine with that. He knows I won’t ask too often. ;) Read the rest of this entry »
