You read that right. With seven days left before the release date you can now get Ubuntu 7.10, Gutsy Gibbon, is a Release Candidate (RC). What does that mean? It means it’s almost ready to be released, but they want to run a final round of testing before they open up the cage on the ape out of its cage.
In case the words Release Candidate scare you, here’s what the Ubuntu Wiki says about the Release Candidate for Gutsy:
We consider this release candidate to be complete, stable and suitable for testing by any user.
That looks pretty safe for me. The Release Notes aren’t in their usual home yet, but the Ubuntu Tutorials blog does have what should be going in to that page. One thing you’ll see from that page is that it’s not just Ubuntu that’s about to get updated, its sister distros (Kubutu, Xubuntu, Edbuntu and Gonuntu) also have Release Candidates for their 7.10, “Gutsy Gibbon”, versions.
You can get some info on what’s changing from Ubuntu WIki page for the Release Candidate. If you want to upgrade your current Ubuntu installation to the Gutsy Release Candidate you can check pout the GutsyUpdates page. You can also download disk images for Ubuntu Gutsy RC, and if you want a disk image for one of the other *ubuntus you can get links from the Release Notes published on the Ubuntu Tutorials blog.
