A.M.O. to be updated Thursday. Abomibations.Mozilla.org no longer?

Posted by Peng on 30 April 2008

A post on the Mozilla WebDev blog this morning reports an update coming to Addons.Mozilla.org this Thursday. It looks like they’re fixing several of the bugs that made me detest the site so much when version 3.4 was rolled out.

You can view a list of bugs targeted for fixing and it does include one of the biggest pains in the arse of AMO 3.4, Bug 425539 – Bring back the compatibility ranges, which is set to block the rollout of the next version of AMO if it’s not fixed properly. Except checking on preview.addons.mozilla.org for an extension I’m waiting for, FLSTstill doesn’t show the versions of Firefox that the extension will work with. So unless things improve between now and when AMO 3.4.1 gets rolled out I’ll continue to call the site Abominations.Mozilla.org and recommend people get their extensions via the Add-ons Mirror.

You can read the announcement for yourself on the Mozilla Web Development blog.

Updated Wed 30 Apr 10:39 am: It looks like I wasn’t looking in the right place for the compatibility range. It’s now in the second section of info underneath Long Description. I was looking for it near the button used for downloading. IMO AMO is still going to be user unfriendly and make us have to look a hell of a lot harder for information that used to be really easy to find. As I posted on the bug I’m going to continue using the Add-ons Mirror for getting my extensions and themes. Mozilla has a long way to go to ditch the Abominations name for their addons site in my book.

I am running Fx3 part of the time because they’ve at least returned the Clear List button for the Download Manager and I’m getting too used to the Address Bar (sorry, I simply can’t join the frigging hype machine and call it by the new name any longer). I checked out Epiphany but I can’t figure out how to do simple things like putting the focus on a new tab, as well as the fact that some of the extensions I depend on (including StumbleUpon and FLST, it seems) don’t work in Epiphany. I also flat out can’t get bookmarks imported from even Firefox 2 or Firefox 3 and that’s a deal breaker for me.

I’m hesitant to try Opera partly I think because of their old ad-supported or paid version options of old. There’s also the extensions issue that is making me wonder if it’s even worth the time it will take to check it out. I’ll let you know what I decide, although I really feel like Mozilla is shoving a ton of basic changes down my throat in Firefox 3 and AMO. Excuse me, I need to run to the Porcelain Goddess.
