Sorry I didn’t get to post any links yesterday. In the am I had some errands to run and I had to go see one of my doctors yesterday afternoon. Needless to say, I hardly had a chance to read my email and RSS feeds let alone post anything.
- Jorge Castro/Planet Ubuntu: Power Management and Anger. Jorge posted about a great little video from Lugradio Live USA about some hardware not working in Linux. It’s a great video, in fact I wish YouTube worked properly for me to save a copy to my local comp.
- Jorge Castro/Planet Ubuntu: Hot Brainstorm Action… Jorge recently got to talk with the minds behind the Ubuntu Brainstorm site and got some feedback from the Ubuntu devs on some of the ideas posted there. What an awesome idea!
- Asa Dotzler: carpet bombing safari users? There’s a bug in Apple’s Safari for Windows that allows a website to inundate the user with “a large number of automatic downloads of executable files”. Apple says it’s not a security issue. One user has a great solution: Simply don’t install Safari at all. Sounds like a plan to me. It makes me glad Apple doesn’t support Linux when it comes to Safari.
- Asa Dotzler: amazing firefox 3 pre-release market share. Would you believe me if I told you that Firefox 3, a browser that isn’t even out yet, has more users than Opera 9? Me either, but it turns out we’d both be wrong.
- Markus Thielmann/Planet Ubuntu: Flash 10 Beta on Ubuntu Hardy. Last month I told you about Flash 10 being available for beta testing. Markus tells us the good and bad about what he’s found with it, including some very good news about Flash 10 in Ubuntu Hardy.
- Daniel Voicu/Planet Ubuntu: Firefox 3 RC1 Crashes on Download. Daniel decided to find out why he didn’t have Firefox 3 RC1 on his system, and when he installed it he found out that opting to save a file from a link made his browser crash. It turns out there was a misbehaving extension that was causing the crash, but even if it weren’t I’d still post this link because some people still have issues with Firefox 3 RC1, with RC2 due as early as tomorrow.
- Philip Newborough/Planet Ubuntu: Linux Podcasts Roundup. I haven’t been bit by the podcast bug yet but I know a lot of you love podcasts. Phillip looks at several Linux-related podcasts that you may want to check out. I may have to subscribe to some of them myself.
- Jordi Mallach: Interview in El País on Debian’s OpenSSL incident. A publication from Madrid, Spain, wrote a nice lengthy article about the recent OpenSSL issue with some information on what users should do next. Jordi was sent some questions for the article and was able to respond to some of the Debian bashing that went on about it. The article itself is in Spanish (not Jordi’s post), so you may want to have your favorite translation tool standing by for it.
- Ubuntu Forums: flash not working on opera, or need separate install. I looked at Opera as a possible replacement for Firefox 3, but the problem of getting Flash to work was one of the reasons I didn’t stick with it for very long. I followed the advice given here but I was unable to get it to recognize Flash (9 or 10). Maye you’ll have better luck with it.
- Tom Dryer/Planet Ubuntu Users: Canonical Announces the Ubuntu Netbook Remix. Some nice small computers based on Intel’s Atom processor are coming out, such as the popular Asus Eee PC, and the parent company of Ubuntu has rolled out the Ubuntu Netbook Remix, a version of Ubuntu specifically designed to run on it. Like I needed another reason to look at the Eee.
- Caspar Clemens Mierau/Planet Ubuntu: my package of the day: weather-util (weather report and forecast for the console). There are already some great weather apps for Linux, but they don’t do anything for people who hate the GUI and prefer to live in the console environment for running programs. Casper has found a weather utility that is specifically designed to run in the console/Terminal. The best part is that it’s just a little Python script, not some several hundred megabytes worth of code and images. And it’s already in the repos, so getting it is a breeze. Unfortunately is doesn’t seem to know about Malden, so I had to settle for the conditions at Logan Airport, which is about 6 miles away as the crow files and right on the water.

Yesterday’s kitty pic was a no brainer, although there was a fairly close second place kitteh.
Today was a little harder to pick. I had a science kitteh, and a gifted kitteh, but in the end one was just too adorable to pass up.
Happy Hump Day! You’re half-way to Friday! And please go buy your kitteh a real toy. S/he deserves it, if for no other reason than for letting you share its abode. Remember, dogs have family, kittehs have staff.
