SecondLife ponders new default avatars
Posted by Nanci Barthelmess on 5 June 2008
Being a noob in SecondLife can be a humbling experience. Not only do you have to figure out how everything works and what’s what, you’re stuck in some pretty bad default avatars until you can get yourself a new shape and skin. (I love the freebie shapes and skins at BodyBasics, which is in a brand new store in a new location). But the good people at Linden Labs have put together a nice selection of possible default avatars that are actually pretty nice for the most part.
Torley Linden has posted a survey with all of the new possible avatars so we can start making our opinions known before the formal (official) info is posted to the SL blog.
Personally I love how Susannah Clary put it on her blog.
Some are incredibly…awful. Others are wonderfully diverse! People who are not white! People who are clearly not under 30! Avatars that are not human! And Nye, if you are reading this – you have to take the survey just to see the one I affectionately call “boxy”. The commentors to Torley’s blog post have some very good points, but it was refreshing to see at least baby steps in the right direction!
Speaking of Susannah, if you haven’t started reading her blog yet you really should. She has some great posts about areas in SecondLife. I have her both on my Google Reader and in my RSS feeds in Thunderbird so I can make sure I don’t miss a post.

You’re welcome, Sus. And trust me, you deserve the plug.
