Heloooooo Planet!

Posted by BostonPeng on 11 June 2008

Now that I’m a part of the Planet Ubuntu Users I thought I’d introduce myse’f. I’ve been using computers for over 20 years and about a year and a half ago I decided I was sick of having to work my tail off making sure I had all the patches, virus defs, and all the other stuff needed to keep Windows XP safe and started looking at Linux. Ubuntu was the second distro I tried (after Freespire) and I’ve been an Ubuntu user ever since.

I can’t code my way out of a paper bag, but I can still help test and have been part of the testing community for Firefox and Thunderbird for the last couple of versions of Firefox. I also helped test Ubuntu Hardy and I’m also running the nightly builds of Amarok, and I hope to help test the next version of the Mac4Lin Transformation Pack as well as help get the docs updated for it. I’m also trying to get more active in the Mass. LoCo, but between being disabled and standing commitments for the evenings I haven’t been able to do much with them.

My blog is actually my sister’s blog and the two of us write about technology and SecondLife, although I usually handle most of the tech posts and she does most of the SL posts. Every now and then you might find a post about our favorite baseball team as well, but we try not to do that too often. ;)

There’s got to be an easier way

Posted by BostonPeng on 11 June 2008

After reading Sense Hofstede’s post about moving from Thunderbird to Evolution and finally being able to sync all the info to his PDA I decided it was time to look into making the switch myself. Mainly because it’s a pain in the arse having to deal with so bloody many calendar sources (Google, Thunderbird/Lightning and J-Pilot). He includes a link to a How-To on importing Thunderbird mail into Evolution, and while its working it’s an incredibly tedious process. I’ve got over 100 folders of email that have to be imported (plus more folders from my Thunderbird 2 profile that didn’t seem to carry over quite properly into Thunderbird 3) and I’m not even 20% of the way after working on it for over an hour.

If someone knows of an easier way to do this please let me know. Something tells me that when I log off and head home in a few hours I’ll have more to do tomorrow.
