Get your WINE 1.0!

Posted by BostonPeng on 17 June 2008

Want some delicious vino? You don’t have to go to the local liquor store, or even your favorite supermarket. You don’t have to order it online and wait for UPS to deliver it, wither. Just surf over to WineHQ and get the official 1.0 release of WINE (Wine is Not an Emulator), the best way to run those Windows programs that you simply can’t do without in Linux.

How about some cheese and crackers to go with your WINE? Naaaah, although not every Windows program works flawlessly with WINE. You can check the Wine Application Database to see what others are saying about your favorite Windows program. And if you have different results, better or worse than what’s been reported, please post them so other users will be able to share your knowledge.

Builds are now in progress of being made. You can get the source code if you want to build it yourself, or keep an eye on the download page to see when it’s available in the form you need it. Ubuntu users will have to either build it yourself or be patient for Scott Ritchie, the maintainer of the Ubuntu packages, to get the builds made and loaded into the repositories.

This is such good news, and so long awaited, that you may want to open a bottle of your finest bubbly to celebrate it with.
