Peng’s links for Thursday, 23 Oct

Before I start the process of upgrading to Ubuntu Intrepid (the RC isn’t officially out according to what I’m seeing, but it should come out today) I wanted to post some links for y’all.
- Mackenzie Morgan: Why do people hate Ubuntu’s fonts? One of the issues people always seem to have when they first fire up one of the Ubuntu family distros of Linux (Ubuntu, Kununtu, Xubuntu, etc.) is how the fonts look. But Mackenzie slips our hand into hers (not that way, she’s taken) and shows us how to tweak the fonts to look much better than they do out of the box.
- Tom Dryer: Enhance Your Clipboard with a Clipboard Manager. If you’ve ever copied some text to the clipboard and couldn’t paste it into another window because you closed the first app our hero Tombuntu comes to the rescue with two tools to help you keep that clipboard data until you decide you’re finished with it.
- LinuxDevices.com: Moblin Linux gathers momentum. If you’re looking at netbooks that run Linux you’ll be glad to hear that the Moblin project has rolled out a new toolkit that will make developing for MIDs even easier.
- Ubuntu Productivity: Upgrading Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10. Here’s another user who took the early plunge to Ubuntu Intrepid and found it “remarkably simple” on his Macbook and iMac.
- Dennis O’Reilly/Cnet Worker’s Edge: Put the information you need on your home page. iGoogle has changed your home page with a new pane, and Dennis isn’t all that thrilled at it. Neither am I, because it takes my three-column layout and makes it essentially four columns wide, with no easy way to kill the new tab. Dennis looks at some other alternatives to iGoogle for those who use iGoogle but feel the new tab is simply too damned intrusive.
- [CORRECTED LINK] Paul Hummer: How Launchpad Helped Entertainer Leave the Atmosphere. Entertainer, a new media center software project for GNOME and Xfce written in Python, has reached its first release. Thanks to Launchpad Paul has code hosting, bug tracking, translation and more. His not only pimps his new software (which looks pretty good from the site) but also has great info on people looking at putting together a new software project.
As I start my upgrade to Intrepid I’ll go ahead and prepare a post on how things go and my early thoughts on the new version of Ubuntu.

You might want to update the link to Paul Hummer’s blog entry as it leads nowhere right now…

Thanks for the catch. I grabbed the link from Planet Ubuntu and didn’t realize where it was leading. It turns out Paul moved his site to a new server and several Planets got “spammed”. I’ll fix the link and leave what I wrote because it’s still a great article, even though it’s from June.
