[UPDATED] Peng’s links for Sunday, 2 November

Posted by Peng on 2 November 2008

[Updated to correct some misinformation I wrote about Automatix. Thanks to the commenters for helping correct me. -Peng]

I trust nobody forgot to set their clocks an hour ahead last night and ended up being late for something today. Here’s today’s links for when you get finished reading the Sunday paper, especially the educational pages. (No, that’s not a Veza-shortened link. For some odd reason their site is well and truly borked right now.)

  • Scott Kitterman: Switching your kids to Linux. While Scott intends this post to be ablut switching your young ‘uns, it’s also a great way to move folks of any age to the joys of open source software.
  • Steven Rose: Ultamatix, Ultimatix, or if you please Automatix. Stevey does a great job following up on his August post about why you should steer clear of Automatix and it’s successor. I’m not sure how he feels about the third party app section of Ubuntu Tweak, but he always posts in a manner that promotes discussion rather than flame wars.
  • Debian Package of the Day: Synfig: the free software alternative for 2D animation. If you’ve wanted to try your hand at animation there’s a great open source app called Synfig that can help you get started without paying the big bucks that proprietary software demands. And if you’re looking for something that can handle feature film quality animation then you need to look at Synfig no later than today. ;)
  • Matthew Garrett: Ultamatix. The developer of Automatix A Ubuntu dev looked Automatix in the past and he takes aim at Ultamatix, pulling no punches when he says why you shouldn’t use it. And no, he’s not anti-Ultamatix. He says his Automatix “died and the world became a better place.” But he shows exactly why he says of Ultamatix, “It’s crap. And dangerous. But mostly crap.”
  • Fabrizio Balliano: Ubuntu Customization Kit 2.0.4 is out. If you want to customize a LiveCD to hand out to your family, friends and strangers you’ll want the UCK. It’s now updated to work with Ubuntu Intrepid and will rock your socks off.

Garrett is not the developer of Automatix.

Then someone needs to tell him that. From his post:

I wrote about Automatix some time ago.

  3. Tiago said

He wrote about Automatix, but he didn’t write (code) it. He’s part of the Ubuntu Technical Board, and did a code assessment to Automatix.

  4. He *was* member of the Technical Board.

.. or that! :) Still, not the author of the software.

  6. Peng, he says clearly “I wrote *about* Automatix”. This is quite different to “I wrote Automatix”. If you follow the link that comes after those words you’ll see from his post he clearly didn’t write Automatix.

I see he edited his post to add the clarification. I’ll make the change on mine. I’m chalking it up to having too many things to do on a Sunday morning in addition to writing a blog post. That’s why I didn’t drill down further in the first place.

I’m glad there was some discussion about it, and you all helped clarify the matter, and on two blogs at that. Again, thanks for keeping me honest and calling me when I get lazy.

Now if I could only get some assistance on <a href=”http://nancib.wordpress.com/2008/11/02/does-anyone-know-what-borked-wine-this-week/”my WINE issue from our readers. ;)

What? The only edit I made to that post was the last line to note that there was a newer release. I never implied that I wrote Automatix.

I misread your post when I linked to it. My bad, and I have made the change to my post. I’m keeping the comments, etc., simply for people who saw my original post and may be confused by the change.
