[UPDATED] Please help check the Mac4Lin 1.0 docs

Posted by BostonPeng on 15 November 2008

[Updated to add links to repaired GTK theme files. -Peng]

[Removed the link to the PDF since it needs to get updated. -Peng]

We’re getting close to releasing Mac4Lin 1.0 and we have the documentation pretty much finished, except for some screenshots that still need to be made. I’ve been unable to get the latest version of the docs uploaded to the Mac4Lin SourceForge site but I realized I can post it here so people can get it. (D’oh!)

Please download the PDF for the Mac4Lin 1.0 documentation RC2 and let us know if you find things that need fixing, either on the support thread on the Ubuntu Forums or on the forums on our SourceForge site. We know that the screenshots at the back of the docs need to be updated, and the Thanks page needs to get updated, but otherwise I think we have everything finished and ready for release, pending final updates to the Firefox themes and compiling the Firefox and Thunderbird extensions that we want to include.

Updated 3:40 PM EST: Anirudh, aka infra_red_dude, got me the updates that I needed, as well as a couple of corrections I needed to make, and we decided to move the screenshots from section 20 and put them on the Mac4Lin site on SourceForge. I went ahead and updated the PDF and you can get it here. (The docs are unavailable since I need to update the screenshots to match the latest RC. And no, we still don’t have a release date due to limitation of time that the dev team can put into it.) This version completely supersedes the version I posted this morning, which has been removed from the server.

Updated 24 November 7:45 AM: The GTK theme files in Mac4Lin 1.0 RC have an error that causes some fussing on the Theme tab of the Appearance Preferences dialog. This is a known issue, and has been resolved for the next RC, but I’ve posted them to our Ubuntu Forum support thread for your use.

“No part or whole of this guide should be reproduced without permission”
    how come?

are you not an open source type guy?

Actually Mac4Lin is an open source project. I’ve asked Anirudh to respond to your comment. Thanks for asking.

  3. Hello Anon,

Mac4Lin is open-source project and you are free to do anything with it. The restriction is only on the guide. There is a reason behind it. Initially when the guide was up, people modified it according to their liking and posted it up on their blogs saying this text is taken from the Mac4Lin guide. These “modifications” unfortunately didn’t work for everybody and many users started mailing back to me saying your guide screwed up my system so help me fix it. The truth however was that, the modified instructions had caused the break. Hence, I put up this line saying you need permission to reproduce part or whole of the guide so that I can make sure that the person is posting correct instructions which will not screw up others’ system and in the end they come and blame me that my guide caused all this.

I hope you get the point :)

Thanks, Anirudh. I knew there was probably a good reason for it.

    hi,

    thanks for replying

would you consider licensing the guide as creative-commons no-derivatives?

  6. @Anon

Hey that sounds like an apt license. I didn’t know much about these licenses. Its only now that I went thru the text. I think this license suits the docs :) Thank you for letting me know about it :)

    Hello,
    Quote from chapter 7.2

Copy all the images files from the folder /Mac4Lin_v1.0/GTK to the folder
    /usr/share/pixmaps/splash.

… there is no images in that directory in the Mac4Lin_v1.0_RC1.tar.gz file …

  8. @Ech

Thank you. It was a goof up from my side while packaging the RC/RC1! I will fix it soon :)
