Mozilla makes another decision against usability

Firefox 3 seems to be about changing usability, and not always for the better. First we had text zoom made secondary and zoom levels being rememberd according to the site, not the tab, and now a button that has always been present in the Download Manager is removed, and the bug asking for it to be returned has ben marked WONTFIX. Ubuntu fixes the Hardy NumLock bug

14 days to Ubuntu Hardy!Many of us who have been testing Ubuntu Hardy have found there’s a bug that leaves the NumLock setting off as it boots up, despite our having it turned on in our BIOS. Fixing the borked numeric keypad in Ubuntu Hardy

I was finally able to do some hunting around Launchpad to find out why the numeric keypad on my keyboard “broke” once I got Ubuntu Hardy installed, and I was able to find a workaround for it. It’s also not a Hardy bug after all but a GNOME bug, and I’ve got both a workaround and bug links for all that need it. Read the rest of this entry »

WINE needs your votes

WINE, the ten yesr old open source program layer that lets Linux users run Windows programs (the name is an acronym for Wine Is Not an Emulator)  is preparing for their 1.0 release in June and needs your help deciding which bugs absolutely need to be fixed before WINE 1.0 ships. Why the Search tool is your friend

I’m helping test beta versions of Firefox 3 and I’m looking at helping test either alpha or beta versions of Ubuntu 8.04 “Hardy Heron” and I’m amazed at how many times I see a new thread or a new bug report that duplicates one that already existed. Or even worse, how many comments keep getting added to a bug after the devs say “It’s a known issue. We’re working on it.”

For the love of God, people, if you want to help test software it’s not enough to want to report issues you find. Before you start posting the issue see if it’s already reported. Read the rest of this entry »
