Ubuntu Hardy Alpha 6 plus some great personal finance software

I meant to post this a few days ago, but Ubuntu has released Alpha 6 of Ubuntu 8.04 “Hardy Heron.” Plus if you’re looking for some good financial management software for Linux I may have a program you are looking for.

I started the move toward Ubuntu Hardy. Kind of.

Last month I wrote that walkerk had written another script for upgrading the Ubuntu Kernel from the Gutsy kernel to the one being used for the development of Ubuntu Hardy, but I wasn’t making that upgrade just yet.

Today I finally downloaded and ran the upgrade script and it’s amazing how simple it was for me.

Get a head start on the next version of Ubuntu

Back in September I posted about a way to use the kernel from the then in development Gutsy Gibbon version of Ubuntu. You can now get the kernel for the Ubuntu 8.04 “Hardy Heron” thanks to instructions on the Ubuntu Forums.

Another Gutsy major update before the release, but this one was painless

You may remember that I did a major Ubuntu upgrade back on the 5th, and I ended up with some pretty bad video issues. I saw that there were some updates earlier this evening, including another rather minor kernel upgrade, from 2.6.22-13 to 2.6.22-14 and the obligatory video driver upgrades. The change notes weren’t available yet so I waited until I could see what was being changed.

I finally checked again and saw all the change notes for the over 60 programs that wanted to be upgraded so I hit the nice, friendly Install Updates button. (Not to be confused with a big red button that should never ever be pushed. Bonus points if you caught the reference I just used. The first person to post the right answer in a comment will get a free Nanci’s Naughties tee if you’re on SecondLife.) When it was all done I crossed my fingers and rebooted my computer without running Envy to update the video drivers like I used to do all the time.

[RESOLVED] Houston, we have a problem with video drivers after the kernel upgrade to 2.22.13

After getting a few rounds of upgrades to Ubuntu Gutsy with no problems, some of the upgrades in the latest batch brought the kernel to version 2.22.13. Since I accepted it I am unable to use my Nvidia graphics cards.

In my first post on this blog I mentioned that I was using the Feisty Fawn version of Ubuntu Linux (version 7.04) and I was looking forward to upgrading to the new Gutsy Gibbon version (7.10) when it hits beta tomorrow, although I had concerns about my video drivers. walkerk wrote a great tutorial over on the Ubuntu Forums about upgrading to the new kernel (base files for the operating system) and after getting caught up with reading over 50 pages of the thread I finally decided to take the plunge. While I did had a glitch with the video drivers it was an easy fix and even while running Ubuntu Feisty I’m noticing some improvements.

Warning: Some pretty heavy geek-speak is included, but I’ll try to keep it to a minimum.
